As of this week, Meta has officially stopped supporting WhatsApp on several older iPhone models, marking the end of an era for users still holding on to devices launched over a decade ago.
According to a statement from the company, WhatsApp will no longer receive updates or function properly on the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as these devices no longer meet the app’s minimum security and software requirements.
iOS 15.1 Now the Minimum Requirement
The change is tied to WhatsApp’s decision to raise its minimum supported operating system to iOS 15.1. This means that any iPhone running an older version of iOS — including the 5s and 6 series which max out at iOS 12 — will no longer be compatible.
Previously, iPhones running iOS 12 and above were supported. But starting with the next major WhatsApp update, users will need iOS 15.1 or newer to continue using the app.
What This Means for Users
If you’re still using an older iPhone that hasn’t received updates for years, you will no longer be able to send or receive messages on WhatsApp. Additionally, these legacy devices are also losing compatibility with other major apps, including Instagram and Spotify.
While this update impacts only a small portion of WhatsApp’s global user base, it’s still a tough pill to swallow for fans of older hardware. The iPhone 5s was released in 2013, with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launching in 2014. Apple officially discontinued these models in 2016 and later classified them as “vintage,” meaning they no longer receive service, spare parts, or security updates.
WhatsApp’s Explanation
In a statement, WhatsApp said:
“Devices and operating systems evolve constantly, and we regularly review the systems we support. Users will receive several in-app notifications and reminders to update their system before support ends.”
Meta emphasized that upgrading to iOS 15.1 or later is essential to ensure uninterrupted access to WhatsApp, even for newer iPhone models.
