BMW i Vision AMBY: The Future of Electric Bike

The BMW i Vision AMBY is a groundbreaking high-speed pedelec designed to revolutionize urban transportation. Although it may resemble a traditional e-bike at first glance, it offers far more in terms of capabilities and versatility. Unveiled at the IAA Mobility event, it is part of a larger initiative by BMW to explore the future of city mobility with five concept vehicles. These concepts, powered by electric propulsion, digital technology, and a strong focus on sustainability, aim to address a variety of transportation needs for urban and suburban areas.

Adaptive Mobility for Modern Cities

The “AMBY” in the name stands for “adaptive mobility,” and the BMW i Vision AMBY is built with this principle in mind. Equipped with an electric drive system, it offers three speed settings to accommodate different road types. Riders can reach up to 25 km/h (15.5 mph) on bike paths, 45 km/h (28 mph) in city centers, and up to 60 km/h (37 mph) on multi-lane roads or highways. However, for speeds beyond 25 km/h, the bike requires the appropriate license and insurance.

To activate the electric assistance, riders must continue pedaling, making it distinct from traditional e-bikes that provide power on demand. The bike’s settings can be adjusted through an app, or automatically via geofencing technology, which detects the rider’s location and the type of road they are on. This flexibility in speed and location-based adjustments paves the way for new legislation surrounding modular speed concepts, which could become a standard for urban vehicles in the future.

Breaking Boundaries Between Bike and Motorcycle

The BMW i Vision AMBY blurs the lines between a bike and a motorcycle. According to Werner Haumayr, Vice President of BMW Group Design, this shift in perspective allows for a more personalized approach to mobility. The i Vision AMBY offers the speed and power of a light motorcycle but retains the flexibility and fitness benefits of a bike. It’s perfect for navigating through congested city streets quickly while offering a healthy and eco-friendly alternative to traditional cars.

Designed to cater to the needs of larger cities, the i Vision AMBY serves as an ideal second vehicle for families or an entry point for those seeking electrified two-wheeled transport. Its three riding modes expand the use case beyond that of a typical e-bike, offering more versatility for urban commuting.

Design Focused on Performance and Comfort

The BMW i Vision AMBY stands out with its striking design, combining lightweight aesthetics with powerful performance. The frame has been built for both strength and stability, giving it a more robust presence compared to traditional e-bikes. The structure blends elements from both racing bikes and sporty e-bikes, with a dynamic, sculpted aluminum frame that serves as both a visual statement and a functional design feature. A slight curve in the frame adds to the bike’s sporty look while also creating space to store personal items such as a backpack or laptop bag.

The bike’s 2,000 Wh battery, positioned centrally in the frame, ensures a range of up to 300 km (186 miles), depending on the selected riding mode. With fast-charging technology, it recharges in just three hours. The low-maintenance toothed belt and integrated transmission system ensure a smooth ride, while a unique single-sided swinging arm links the rear wheel to the frame for improved handling. With 120 mm of suspension travel at both ends, the i Vision AMBY is perfect for city roads and speeds up to 60 km/h (37 mph). The 27.5-inch wheels are fitted with larger, wider tires, offering superior comfort and stability.

A Step Toward Sustainability

The BMW i Vision AMBY is designed with sustainability at its core. The frame is made from anodized secondary aluminum, similar to the material used in the BMW i Vision Circular, while the handlebars and battery cover use recycled plastics. These materials are designed to be easily recycled at the end of their lifecycle, contributing to a circular economy. The brake fluid is made from rapeseed oil, further reducing the environmental impact. BMW also ensures that the components of the i Vision AMBY are produced locally in Germany, minimizing transportation distances and supporting sustainable practices.

Smart Connectivity for an Enhanced Riding Experience

The BMW i Vision AMBY takes full advantage of smart technology. Through a dedicated app, users can activate the bike, store their license details, and manage insurance coverage. The app also acts as a digital key, offering security features like facial recognition for unlocking and starting the bike. The seat post is biometrically adjustable based on the user’s profile, ensuring maximum comfort and fit.

Geofencing technology is another standout feature. Using detailed maps, the bike can automatically adjust its speed settings based on the type of road it’s on, from pedelec mode to S-pedelec or even motorcycle-like performance. While the bike can be manually controlled, the automatic adjustments ensure safety and compliance with traffic regulations. The display, powered by e-ink technology, provides real-time information about the selected mode, making it easy for riders and other road users to stay informed.

Safety Features for a Secure Ride

BMW has also equipped the i Vision AMBY with advanced safety features. These include an optimized ABS system for bicycles, a proximity radar that alerts users of vehicles approaching from behind, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The bike also has an automatic high-beam assistant, a brake light assistant, and a daytime riding light, ensuring maximum visibility on the road.

Conclusion

The BMW i Vision AMBY is an innovative leap forward in urban transportation, combining the benefits of electric bikes and light motorcycles. With its adaptable speed modes, cutting-edge design, and focus on sustainability, it offers a unique solution for modern urban mobility. Smart features, a sleek look, and powerful performance make it an ideal choice for those seeking an eco-friendly, efficient, and fast way to get around the city. The i Vision AMBY not only represents the future of two-wheeled transportation but also demonstrates BMW’s commitment to shaping the mobility solutions of tomorrow.
