Saudi Hospital Unveils First Stroke Ambulance Outside the US and EU
Enhancing Patient Care During the Crucial Golden Hour and Reducing Long-Term Disabilities
King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) has launched the region’s first Mobile Stroke Ambulance Unit, marking a significant advancement in medical technology and clinical expertise for stroke patients in the Middle East and North Africa. This innovative unit allows the medical team to deliver immediate care during transport, greatly enhancing recovery and survival rates while reducing long-term disabilities, with a 70% higher likelihood of restoring normal bodily functions.
The initiative is designed to improve stroke outcomes and expedite life-saving treatment during the critical first hour after symptoms appear. It addresses specific challenges faced by patients in Riyadh, including traffic congestion and extended transport times to hospitals, which can delay access to essential care and impact treatment outcomes and overall patient quality of life.
The Mobile Stroke Unit is dispatched after the Saudi Red Crescent Authority receives reports of stroke symptoms—such as arm weakness, facial drooping, or difficulty speaking—from the patient’s family. KFSHRC’s emergency unit is then alerted, and the Mobile Stroke Unit is deployed to the patient’s location, enabling on-site diagnosis and immediate treatment.
This specialized Stroke Unit, equipped within an ambulance, includes a dedicated medical team comprising a vascular neurologist, a critical care nurse, a paramedic, and a CT scan technician. They perform brain imaging and assess cerebral blood vessels before reaching the hospital, allowing for timely medical interventions.
The Mobile Stroke Unit is featured at KFSHRC’s pavilion at the Global Health Exhibition in Riyadh, where visitors can explore its advanced capabilities, including technologies such as CT scans, MRI, carotid artery ultrasound, and cerebral angiography. This innovation reinforces KFSHRC’s leadership in providing cutting-edge stroke treatment solutions.
Stroke remains a significant global health issue, ranking as the third leading cause of death in Saudi Arabia. It occurs due to either reduced blood flow to a part of the brain or the rupture of a blood vessel, leading to brain damage. Stroke can affect anyone, including children, particularly if risk factors are present.
Notably, KFSHRC has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 20th globally among the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centres for the second consecutive year.
